The most common way to connect is through individual counseling. This is when you connect with a counselor one-on-one for a face-to-face session. The challenges that may be discussed can range from eliminating unwanted feelings (e.g., depression, anxiety, resentment, grief) to finding clarity for your life goals. The first session usually consists of an intake interview or consultation where crucial information is gathered to help the counselor to more thoroughly understand the current challenges. Based on that information, a collaboration of identifying treatment goals and changes desired will occur. Each subsequent session is developed to help you reach the goals you hope to experience in your life. Counseling (also known as psychotherapy or therapy) can be valuable in learning new coping skills or strategies to navigate difficult emotions or situations, developing greater clarity and insight into why these problems are occurring, or simply experiencing healing through being known and understood.
